ADVENTURE GUIDES AUSTRALIA
BUCHAN WILD CAVING
SCHOOL ADVENTURES
2005 / 2006 FINANCIAL YEAR
BUCHAN
Buchan is in Gippsland just outside of Lakes Entrance and can be accessed
via the great Alpine road from Bright or along the Coast from Melbourne.
It is a small township originally based around the Timber Industry, now
a holiday area for fisherman, bush walkers and cavers. There is a shop, small
country hotel and a variety of Motels, Self Contained and budget style accommodation.
ACCOMMODATION
We would normally Camp at the Buchan camping ground. The camping ground
has good facilities for campers and is also an excellent option in the warmer
months.
SHOW CAVES
No visit to Wee Jasper is complete without a visit to one
of the show caves. This is an extra fee, but a small one and is well worth
including into your adventure.
LIMESTONE CAVES
Limestone Caves are formed by water seeping along cracks in the limestone
slowly dissolving the stone away to form Tunnels and Caverns. This water
in turn deposits the Calcite it has dissolved to form magnificent Cave Decoration
that hang from the ceilings, flow down the walls, and rise up from the floors.
The Buchan show caves have excellent examples of most forms of Cave Decoration.
We will also find cave decoration in the Wild Caves that we explore.
WILD LIMESTONE CAVING
During our Adventure we will use both horizontal Caving techniques and vertical
systems to explore the Caverns.
Horizontal caving is where we do not need abseil and climbing systems but
are able to access the caves by crawling and walking.
In Vertical caving we use rope or ladder systems
to access the areas we wish to visit and explore.
In some Caves this is the only way to gain access.
*We start with horizontal Cave systems:
HORIZONTAL CAVING (ITS TIGHT IN THERE)

*Then we will progress to practicing abseiling etc on
a cliffs outside of the Caves:
ABSEILING

*Once we have mastered these skills we will abseil into one of the
Caverns and explore harder to access places.
VERTICAL CAVING AT THE POTHOLES

* The practice and use of other techniques such as the use of steel
wire ladders and single rope ascending systems etc will also be included.
Parks Victoria at Buchan restricts group sizes to 6
participants (including Teachers or adult supervisors) to two guides
in the key caves. This makes Adventures at this location more costly than
at other cave areas.
